Northern Nevada: The Outtakes

Posted on 11/05/10

The premiere issue of Outrider Journal will feature a short piece on Northern Nevada, a location we get to at least once a year. When most people think of Nevada, images of the Las Vegas strip and barren landscape come to mind. But the deserts of the western U.S. are filled with beautiful vistas and unique features that provide for some incredible outriding.

Our route started near Susanville, California, then wound its way up through Gerlach, Nevada, and across the famous Black Rock Playa. We had BMWs, KLRs, DRZs and KTMs along, with two routes planned for the different sized motorcycles. The Playa is always good for a chuckle, with all the bikes nudging 100-mph in a plume of dust that trailed for miles behind. A night at Soldier Meadows Guest Ranch and a soak in the hot spring eased some early aching muscles and got us ready for the next few days: off-road routes to Cedarville, California, then back to Susanville.

Here are a few outtakes from the trip.
